LUNCH BEAT: MINNEAPOLIS
WHAT IS LUNCH BEAT?
Lunch Beat is a mid-day event that features a 60-minute DJ set; a vegetarian, takeaway meal; and plenty of free water. Lunch Beat offers a break from the daily grind, providing an opportunity for a physical and social boost of energy that will inspire and reinvigorate you when you get back to work.
WHY LUNCH BEAT?
In recent years, there has been a movement away from the traditional physical office set-up as workers realize the health risks associated with staying stationary for many consecutive hours. Trends point to a rise in alternative workstations such as standing desks, exercise ball chairs, or even treadmills at desks. We want to take this one step further. Not only will people need to get up, leave their office, and step outside, but their otherwise stationary day will be interrupted by physical exercise in a fun, social environment. It also provides a way for people to build relationships with other members of their community that they do not normally cross paths with. With the increase in virtual communities created through digital technologies such as email, social media, and shared online documents, opportunities for spontaneous, meaningful interactions and communication offline decrease. Always being “connected,” has expanded the workday past the traditional 9 to 5, meaning we are working more than ever. Sarah Reynolds, one of the organizers of a newly-formed Lunch Beat branch in Long Island City said, “[W]e spend half of our lives either at work or commuting. We spend a lot of our time making a living and not really living…This is for everybody. Everybody likes to dance.”
YOUR MOST IMPORTANT BUSINESS LUNCH
By promoting one hour of fun, socially oriented exercise in the form of daytime dancing, Lunch Beat embodies the buzzwords of playfulness, participation, and community. Lunch Beat is a strictly sober event that does not allow the use or presence of drugs or alcohol; the club atmosphere will be derived from people’s physical movement, music, and decorations in the venue. Lunch Beat events will always be nonprofit and will include a lunch meal, with locally sourced vegetarian ingredients, and served in a way that makes it easy to eat on spot or take with you back to the office.
The funds raised will go towards covering venue expenses, costs for lunch and unlimited bottles of water, and a live DJ. With your help, we can launch Lunch Beat Minneapolis and become part of a global network! Once the goal is met, we'll start promoting the event on- and offline. Lunch Beat will be held at The Cedar on Friday, September 28th from noon to 1pm.
Lunch Beat was founded by Molly Ränge, a 28-year-old concept developer with a passion for work, dance and the power of communities that grow beyond the web. In June 2010, and the first event was arranged in the Fabel garage under Hötorget in the city of Stockholm, Sweden. 14 people attended the event. During the autumn of 2010, the underground movement organically kept growing, and had to find new locations as more and more people started to attend the event. Today, the project has been given significant attention in international media, such as BBC World, Business Week, Oprah and Slate, and has been covered in all major media (paper print, TV and radio) in Sweden. More regular events were arranged during the spring of 2011, and the first Lunch Beat outside Stockholm, initiated by a local creator, was arranged in Malmö. In April 2012, Lunch Beat Stockholm attracts more than 600 people to the monthly events. Lunch Beat has about 25 international branches and the start up interest in the US is growing. Today, the project has been given significant attention in international media, such as BBC World, Business Week, Oprah and Slate, and has been covered in all major media (paper print, TV and radio) in Sweden.
