At noon, get your tickets early for iconic British singer-songwriter and political activist Billy Bragg (6/13), celebrating 25 years in the business with his first new studio album in six years aptly titled Mr Love and Justice. You will also be able to buy tickets at noon for Gretchen Peters (4/17), striking out boldly after a self-confessed midlife crisis and divorce. At 2pm, collect your tickets for two of the hottest indie singer-songwriters around, the highly poetic Ms Laura Veirs, and the human lightning-bolt Liam Finn (5/13), and an intriguing insect-themed multimedia performance by Mirah and Spectratone International to accompany 12 short films Share This Place. Restlessly peripatetic, incessantly improvisational and always brilliant - that ain't no forehead, that's an eight head! Eight Head is percussionist Marc Anderson, bassist Jim Anton, drummer J.T. Bates, and guitarist Dean Magraw; purveyors of a remarkably fresh, jaw droppingly sophisticated and infectiously groovy vibe. They bring vast experience and variety onto the stage, making effortless transitions from soft textures and thoughtful improvisation to infectious polyrhythms and driving funk. Eight Head will be joined by Louis Alemayehu, one of the founders of the award-winning poetry/jazz ensemble Ancestor Energy. Alemayehu is a writer, educator, poet, father, grandfather, performer and activist of African and Native American heritage.

The Rake on The Cedar

In the span of a few weeks at the Cedar, it’s possible to experience a dozen-piece African band, a haunting hardanger fiddle player, an Iowan folksinger, a Saami joiker, and a legendary bluegrass band. This intimate, no-frills venue, which resembles a middle school auditorium circa 1970, conjures the true spirit of community, with children playing in the aisles and old-country old-timers pulling out genuine dance moves. Despite all that recommends it, the Cedar remains a shoestring operation—a situation Bruce Cockburn hopes to turn around with this benefit (3/14). Expect a sneak preview of the Canadian folksinger and activist’s new album (due this summer) and a rousing battle cry to save an incredible place. (The Rake, March 2007)
