V3, in the words of Tony Glover, "is about songs, not technical virtuosity;" a roots-oriented blend of blues, country, folk, gospel and rock'n'roll, with a little R&B on the side. Tonight they are joined by purveyors of old-time country duets par excellence, The Get Up Johns.
V3 was formed by Tony Glover in 2002. Glover has long been a prominent figure in Midwest history, as well as the national music scene. As a member of Koerner, Ray and Glover, Tony laid down a legacy of folk-blues integrity that continues to inspire today. Glover himself plays harp and guitar; Galen Michaelson, who's been making music with Tony since the 1960's, plays lead guitar; Jon Rodine (City Pages' 2004 "Acoustic Performer of the Year") plays piano. All three trade off on vocals. Expect tunes from people like Sonny Boy Williamson, Hank Williams and Townes Van Zandt, for example.
Dressed in matching black suits, The Get Up Johns' repertoire is composed largely of old-time and early country tunes. Each show is an inspired set of sin, salvation, and heartbreak with Jake Hyer playing the stone-faced straight man to Josh Wenck's garrulous carnie barker. City Pages called their 2006 release Trouble In Mind "...an exquisitely executed collection of largely traditional country tunes in the vein of the Delmore and Louvin brothers. But the chief charm is their heartbreaking vocal harmonies. The duo's voices blend so seamlessly that you'll swear they share some DNA."
