With no irony intended, to launch the new Cedar App on an iPhone (or iPod Touch), one touches a photo of the venue's recently restored 1948 "Cedar" neon marquee. From there, the user is able to see a complete list of upcoming shows, listen to a monthly "newsletter podcast," watch videos both of upcoming artists as well as some special, captured performances from the venue's long history from YouTube, map directions and even buy tickets. The Cedar is the first Twin Cities venue with its own iPhone App, now available for download for free on Apple's iTunes Store.
Tickets for four more super Cedar shows are now on sale, including a solo acoustic show by Minnesota-bred singer-songwriter Peter Himmelman (6/3), a high energy appearance by Balkan Beat Box (6/4), touring very sparingly with their new album Blue Eyed Black Boy, gothic alt country duo Handsome Family (6/11), and sublime kora music from Toumani Diabaté, performing with the Symmetric Orchestra (8/6).
Tickets available now from the Cedar Ticketline (612-338-2674 ext 2), Cedar outlets (Electric Fetus, Depth of Field, Irish on Grand, and Homestead Pickin' Parlor), and online at Ticketweb.
On sale now are tickets for four fantastic shows, starting with Dark Dark Dark's illuminating Bright Bright Bright EP release (4/15), in a show that will not only feature the choir that helped out on the recording, but also music from kindred chamber folkies Spirits of the Red City, and Brett Bullion (of Tarlton). Get happy with the inaugural local production of Radio Happy Hour (10pm 4/24), a variety show featuring special guests Tapes 'n Tapes, Chris Koza, and Geoff Herbach, and lots of corny humor.
Tickets are available NOW from Ticketweb and the usual Cedar outlets for the film screening of ODDSAC, a visual album set to new music by Animal Collective, with the director Danny Perez and members of Animal Collective present (7pm and 9pm Sat Mar 20).
March is just around the corner and the newsletter is here! Be sure to download a full-length color pdf of your very own. March is coming in like a lion and will go out like one too. It brings a very eclectic group of artists to the stage from all corners of the world both musically and physically. Starting the month is a stellar group, The Punch Brothers, with frontman Chris Thile. This is Rob's pick of the month. There is also Alash, throat singers from Tuva, Habib Koité and Bamada from Mali, enjoy some roots reggae with Taj Weekes from the island of St. Lucia, Tété and Eric John Kaiser both from France and Tété by way of Senegal, and legendary Irish group Altan. The Cedar Cinema is also showcasing “ODDSAC” with Director Danny Perez and members of Animal Collective.
Shows that have just gone on sale include a nice pair of Cedar Family acts: singer-songwriter Ellis Paul (3/21), who won a Parents' Choice Silver award for his 2008 release Dragonfly Races, and the return of Bunny Clogs (4/24), the very popular family project by Adam Levy of The Honeydogs. And for some exemplary string musicians, look no further than riveting progressive bluegrass outfit The Infamous Stringdusters (4/22), who are releasing a new album Things That Fly, and ex-Wings fingerstyle acoustic guitarist Laurence Juber (5/12).
