Local August ft. The Local Show, Malamanya, Brass Messengers, Tree Party

Don’t sweat the dog days of summer- tune in to local music! From The Local Show’s Artists to Watch (8/20),  a two stage, ten band showcase curated by The Current’s Andrea Swensson, to a high-energy brass and folk-country double bill of Brass Messengers and Tree Party (8/25), to the vintage, Afro-Cuban vibes of Malamanya’s album release party, we’re making the most of August with a Minnesota talent takeover at The Cedar.

Local Show

The Local Show’s Artists to Watch is a showcase of 10 of the best up-and-coming talents of 2016: FRAEA, Ana Tuiran, Lexii Alijai, Good Night Gold Dust, TABAH, Holidae, Lady Midnight, Porno Wolves, Tony Peachka, and Nazeem & Spencer Joles. Curated by music writer and Local Show host Andrea Swensson, Artists to Watch takes place on two stages, both inside and outside the Cedar. Outside, enjoy music on our renovated outdoor plaza, where The Wurst Food Truck will be on site. Inside the hall, check out a display of visual art by Lara Cornell, Jordan Hamilton and Christopher Selleck, all curated by Corey Bracken.

Brass Messengers

This co-headlined show features album releases for both The Brass Messengers and Tree Party!

The Brass Messengers are a Minneapolis street band playing mostly original music inspired by global sources, formed from the annual rubble of of the Heart of the Beast Mayday Parade and Ceremony. Their newest album is “Thigmonasty,” the word for a plant’s response to sound and vibration. Tree Party is a band of small-town transplants that now make music in Minneapolis. They started six years ago as a folk-country band, hot-iron branding the covers of every album, playing street dances and bull rides. They have two new albums for you to hear: “Shelterbelt” –  a project three years in the making that quite literally rose out of the ashes of a burnt recording studio and “Weight Off/ Drones” – a 7″ vinyl  made possible by Hymie’s Vintage Records.

Malamanya is comprised of musicians who share a mutual respect and enthusiasm for traditional rhythms and melodies from Cuba and Latin America, and their onstage energy and compositions reflect the communal, complex, and celebratory spirit prevalent in these musical genres. This show is the debut for their first full-length studio album, recorded, produced, and mixed entirely by Malamanya band members using vintage analog tape recording technology.
