The Pachanga Society
“Crossing Borders: An (im)migration story in words, images and original, traditional and Woody Guthrie songs”

Crossing Borders uses dialogue and songs with all lyrics translated and projected onto a screen behind the performers over images that reinforce the words and show us that people looking for hope and opportunity in a new land today do so in much the same way and for the same reasons as they did in Woody Guthrie’s Dustbowl days.

In the some 15 years of their existence few (if any) bands in Minnesota have brought more culturally diverse, original and popular music with more guest musician collaborators to more people at more venues throughout the hinterlands of greater Minnesota and northern Wisconsin than the Stearns County Pachanga Society. Over those years the Pachanga Society has created its own unique sound that mixes searing guitar, haunting wooden flute and pan-flutes, charango, Cuban tres, keyboards, bass and tight, world-beat percussion, and they have built a repertoire that includes classic songs from all over the Caribbean and Latin America, new arrangements of some Rock and Country standards, and a good, steady dose of original compositions. Dan “Daddy Squeeze” Newton has collaborated with the group a good number of times in the past years in the St. Cloud area and the Pachangueros are all excited to have him bring his full range of accordion virtuosity into the mix as they bring their show from the hinterlands to the Cedar Cultural Center for an evening that promises to move both your feet and your heart.
