Aavartan - The Cycle of Rhythm
Aavartan - The Cycle of Rhythm
Aavartan, Minnesota’s first-ever Tabla (North Indian classical drum) ensemble makes its formal debut at the Cedar. This newly constituted group will present the poetic drumming tradition of Northern India in a small ensemble format. Aavartan will be led by Twin Cities’ well-known Tabla performer, composer and teacher, Dr. A. Pavan, with his mentees, Abhinav Sharma, Siddharth Iyengar, Chinmay Sahu and Samir Patel making up the rest of the Tabla ensemble. The group will also feature well-known artists, Dr. Praful Kelkar on the Sarod (Indian fretless “lute-like” stringed instrument) and Dr. Pooja Goswami Pavan, renowned Hindustani (North Indian classical) vocalist, composer and teacher, as special guests.
The repertoire of the group includes classical Tabla compositions from various Gharanas (stylistic schools), normally performed in solo format, adapted for an ensemble. The types of compositions performed will be wide ranging (drawn from multiple rhythmic cycles in various tempi) so as to give audiences a full appreciation of the unique poetic drumming tradition that is the hallmark of Hindustani music. The Sarod and voice will color the rhythmic content with melodic contours and the Tabla performances will be interspersed with vocal recitations of the poetic compositions to bring out the beauty and splendor of this sophisticated and glorious tradition.
Dr. A Pavan
Dr. Pavan is a regular figure in the Twin Cities’ music circles as a Tabla player, composer and teacher. He has studied with several masters and presently trains with Ustad Shabbir Nisar and Pandit Rajendra Nakod. Dr. Pavan appears on several recordings of world/fusion music and has provided Tabla instruction to well over 250 students. He has been a very active presenter and promoter of Indian classical music in MN for over 25 years, currently serving as an Advisor to the Indian Music Society of Minnesota (IMSOM). Pavan co-composed, with Nirmala Rajasekar and Vijay Ramanathan, the score for Pangea’s production “Partitions” in 2002, followed by the score for the staged reading of Pangea’s “The Partition Project” in 2006. Pavan has composed and performed for several productions of Katha Dance Theater. He has recently completed an ambitious project “50 Lessons for Tabla”, creating video lessons for beginner Tabla students, on YouTube. He has been the recipient of multiple grants for his diverse music projects. Pavan has been the primary driver for multiple large musical productions for IMSOM, in collaboration with premier arts organizations in the Twin Cities, such as “Masters of Percussion” with Ustad Zakir Hussain (2002 and 2006), “Remember Shakti” with Ustad Zakir Hussain, Mandolin Srinivas and John McLaughlin (2003) and several others.

Allalaghatta Pavan is a fiscal year 2016 recipient of an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature; and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
