Executive Director

The Cedar Cultural Center is looking for an Executive Director to lead a dynamic, passionate, and experienced staff and board to further its mission to promote intercultural appreciation and understanding through the presentation of global music and dance, a vital and urgent mission for our community and world. We’re searching for a candidate ready to lead an organization on the verge of many incredible possibilities, connecting global and local musicians to audiences and communities all in the service of finding greater connection among people. 

 

The Organization

The Cedar Cultural Center is a non-profit performing arts organization and all-ages music venue located in Minneapolis, Minnesota USA. It is operated by a professional staff in conjunction with its board of directors, and with key assistance from a large pool of volunteers. Reflecting its location in the diverse Cedar Riverside neighborhood, the venue is known for presenting a wide variety of global roots, folk, indie, experimental, bluegrass, Americana and blues artists, as well as artist residencies, educational programs, workshops, films, dances, comedy, spoken word and community events. The only venue of its kind in the Midwest, The Cedar hosts over 200 events each year including live music performances in all genres along with programming like the Cedar Commissions, a local artist commissioning series; the Global Roots Festival, a free annual world music festival; and Midnimo, a program that presents Somali artists in month-long residencies throughout Minnesota. The Cedar is located in a converted, 1948 movie theater owned by the organization and is an active force in its neighborhood community as well as in the local, national, and international music scene.

The Executive Director Position

The Executive Director (ED) is the key management leader of The Cedar. The ED is responsible for overseeing and leading the staff as it fulfills The Cedar’s mission. This is accomplished through the production and presentation of musical events and programs in its facility and community sites, and supported via earned income, fundraising, marketing, partnerships, and community engagement. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors (Board).

 

Responsibilities include:

Institutional Leadership

  • Lead and maintain the connection between the mission and the balance sheet. The ED is the primary visionary and implementer of The Cedar’s strategic plan in fulfilling its mission, while ensuring it has the financial and human ability to deliver its mission.
  • Lead a highly collaborative team of directors (Operations, Events, Marketing, Booking, Artist Projects) to ensure that The Cedar’s operations and programs are in alignment with mission and financial goals.
  • Identify, assess, and inform the Board of relevant internal and external issues.
  • Foster an effective team and create a healthy and productive work environment for the staff and volunteers.
  • Represent The Cedar in the community and work effectively with community groups. Foster and lead The Cedar as a leading cultural force in a diverse neighborhood and world.
  • Lead strategic planning efforts and a Cedar vision with Board and staff.

Financial

  • With the Directors of Development, Marketing, and Operations build on the fiscal success of The Cedar and its unique position in the community and region.
  • Work with all relevant staff and the board (finance committee) to prepare, implement, and monitor a comprehensive budget.
  • Provide the Board with comprehensive, regular reports on fiscal health.
  • Ensure the organization complies with all employment regulations.
  • Assist with major donor cultivation through local and national grant strategies.

Program

  • With the Booking Director, Producer of Artist Projects, and Director of Events oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the organization’s programs and services. Ensure all Cedar events and programs reflect mission, “brand,” niche, and values.
  • Ensure that the programs and services offered advance the Cedar’s mission.
  • Monitor the day-to-day delivery of the programs and services to maintain or improve quality.
  • Attend and promote events and programs.

Operation

  • With the Director of Operations oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operations of the facility and business.
  • Ensure the organization meets the expectations of its patrons, artists, Board, and supporters.
  • Develop The Cedar’s strategic direction, goals, and objectives.

Human Resources

  • With directors and staff, determine the staffing requirements for effective and efficient organizational management and program delivery.
  • Recruit, interview and select staff possessing the best technical skills and abilities to help further the organization’s mission.
  • Manage directors and conduct annual reviews.
  • Monitor overall staff performance on an on-going basis.
  • Provide leadership for The Cedar’s cultural contexts in its relationship with staff, board, audience, and community.

Community Relations/Advocacy

  • With the Director of Marketing and other directors, communicate with stakeholders about the work of The Cedar, and identify relevant and strategic changes in the community.
  • Establish, maintain, and nurture good working relationships with community to help achieve the goals of the organization.

Risk Management

  • Identify, evaluate and implement measures to control risks to the organization’s people (clients, staff, management, and volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image.  
  • Manage organizational risks with the Board and legal counsel.
  • Ensure The Cedar carries adequate insurance coverage understood by relevant Board and staff.

Experience

Candidates for this position should have the following or relevant professional experience:

  • Proven leadership including experience working with a board, staff, and volunteers.
  • Multiple years of executive leadership, preferably in the non-profit sector.
  • Strong fiscal acumen and demonstrated financial management with:
    • a mixed income stream within a nonprofit context.
    • fundraising with individuals, foundations, government, and corporations.
    • developing and managing long-term forecasts, annual budgets, and financial processes
    • capital campaign experience a plus.
  • Demonstrated management and organizational development experience including:
    • effective leadership of people, finances, and operations.
    • cultural competency skills.
    • effective, clear communication skills both verbal and written.
    • ability to create and lead a humanistic work environment.
    • knowledge of human resources.
    • direct supervision of multiple staff members.
  • Knowledge of:
    • the value and impact of the arts in community building and culture.
    • a comprehensive understanding of world-music genres and artists, as well as, experience in producing large scale music events.
    • demonstrated understanding of the role of artists.
    • demonstrated ability to foster the development of artists.
    • other key organizations and professionals working in The Cedar’s cooperative and competitive landscape.
    • the commercial and nonprofit music industries locally, nationally and internationally including field-wide ideas and trends.
  • Proactive interaction with key stakeholders (e.g., artists and managers, arts and community leaders, institutional supporters, and major donors).
  • Demonstrated commitment to accessibility and inclusiveness for artists and communities.

 

 

Compensation

Salary range: $80,000 to $90,000 commensurate with experience. Benefits package will be offered.
