DO RE #METOO: A Night of Sexist Songs Sung by Righteous Feminists

Daily Show Co-Creator Lizz Winstead and her reproductive rights juggernaut Abortion Access Front (formerly Lady Parts Justice League) are back at The Cedar Cultural Center on July 21st as part of their national Abortion AF Tour. This is the second year they have brought  “Do Re #MeToo: A Night of Sexist Songs Sung by Righteous Feminists” to Minneapolis. This incredible evening will be an extravaganza of the most horrifying and hilariously sexist songs performed by some of your favorite national and local musicians including Jill Sobule and Tina Schlieske!

Do Re #MeToo is a fun and powerful evening that reminds folks just how pervasive sexism and misogyny are in our culture. This power line-up of women and non-binary musicians will cover some of the “classic hits” with all the irony they so richly deserve. What better way to get folks dancing and inspired to fight back against sexism, than with righteous women musically burning it all down!

The power line-up of women and non-binary musicians for the Minneapolis stop of the tour will include Jill Sobule, Tina Schlieske (Tina and The B Sides), Lady Lark, Lori Barbero (Babes In Toyland), Annie Mack,  Janey Winterbauer (The Suburbs, Wits, Sevateem), Danielle Cusack and Emily Schoonover (Bruise Violet), Meghan Kreidler (Kiss The Tiger), Katy Vernon, Triki Miki, and a Zuzu’s Petals reunion all backed by The Maneaters! What better way to remind folks of all the ways popular songs have so horribly demeaned women than by listening to badass performers belt them out?

Hosted by Lizz Winstead, this show will feature her hilarious banter about these songs in between sets, putting the evening into a feminist context.

Each show on the Abortion AF: The Tour including this special Do Re #MeToo version will also include a post-show talkback with local abortion providers and activists who inform the audience about what is at stake for abortion rights in their state. Joining Lizz and company in Minneapolis will be amazing activists from UnRestrict Minnesota to talk about the state of reproductive rights in Minnesota. They will offer tangible ways the Do Re #Metoo audience can roll up their sleeves to fight back.

Says Winstead: "Activists in Minnesota have launched an amazing campaign called UnRestrict Minnesota, and with so many anti-choice laws on the books in this state, UnRestrict Minnesota wants to strike them from the record. Raising public awareness about the laws is job one so I’m excited to learn from them how we can help do our part to ensure Minnesota remains a state that respects the health, privacy and human rights of ALL of its citizens. And that includes safe and accessible access to abortion. These amazing musicians are gonna entertain while taking down the patriarchy and then amazing activists will tell us how we can make Minnesota even greater, all in one evening! It’s a perfect night!”

Abortion Access Front:

Abortion Access Front (AAF) is a 501 (c3) non-profit whose mission is to amplify the discussion about the erosion of reproductive rights. While often using humor, AAF drops knowledge and activism into our pop culture and our social lives. Our goal is to inspire folks who have not been active in the feminist and reproductive rights movements to get up and get active. AAF’s rapid response production team is made up of comedians, writers, and activists, on call 24/7 producing media and creating national actions that respond instantly to the breaking news surrounding reproductive rights issues. Equally as important to the mission of AAF, is to raise awareness about and support independent abortion providers who bear the brunt of anti-abortion legislation and harassment. Several times a year, AAF goes on the road to perform comedy shows in a USO format bringing entertainment and love to these clinics and their communities. They also provide elbow grease at the clinics themselves, including anything from bringing lunch to building a fence to planting bushes to block protesters. Understanding that reproductive rights issues vary by race, class, and gender identity, Abortion Access Front is committed to diversity by creating content that fosters a multicultural, inclusive experience within the reproductive rights movement.
