One year after making its formal debut at The Cedar, AAVARTAN, Minnesota’s first and only Tabla ensemble, returns to present the poetic drumming tradition of Hindustani (North Indian classical) music in a small ensemble format. The repertoire of the group consists of classical Tabla compositions from various Gharanas (stylistic traditions), normally performed in solo format, adapted for an ensemble performance. The Tabla compositions performed by AAVARTAN are wide ranging, drawn from multiple rhythmic cycles in various tempi, so as to give audiences a holistic appreciation of the unique poetic drumming tradition that is the hallmark of Hindustani music. The Sarod and voice color the rhythmic content with melodic contours and the Tabla performances are interspersed with vocal recitations of the Tabla poetry to bring out the beauty and splendor of this sophisticated tradition. AAVARTAN will present all new material in this, version 2.0, on July 21, 2018.
AAVARTAN is led by Dr. A. Pavan with Abhinav Sharma (Tabla), Krissy Bergmark (Tabla), Siddharth Iyengar (Tabla), Chinmay Sahu (Tabla) & Samir Patel (Tabla) and special guests Pooja Goswami Pavan (Voice) and Praful Kelkar (Sarod).
Dr. Pavan has trained in Tabla under several masters including the late Sri G. Laxmiah, Sri Ambika Prasad Mishra and Sri Gopal Mishra. Presently he trains under Sri Rajendra Nakod in Bangalore and Ustad Shabbir Nisar in Hyderabad. He has been very active in the promotion and presentation of classical Indian music in the Twin Cities; he has served as the President of the Indian Music Society of Minnesota (IMSOM) and continues to serve as an Advisor to IMSOM. Over the years, he has performed for Katha Dance Theater, Pangea World Theater, IMSOM and other groups in several productions and concerts. Pavan appears on several recordings of world/fusion music with MN artists. Since 1999, Pavan has provided Tabla instruction to well over 250 students. He has co-composed the music for several theatrical, dance & musical productions with his wife, Dr. Pooja Goswami Pavan.
This activity is made possible in part by funds provided by the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council through a grant from The McKnight Foundation.
