Taleex Band October 26-31, 2014

The music of Taleex Band combines many voices of male and female Somali artists. Though they've performed as a group for less than a year, Taleex Band may be paving the way for a revival of Somali music of the 60's and 70's, often regarded as the most innovative period in the history of Somali music. Somali artists from this era are described by Somali music historian Sanaag Samataliye as, "consistently innovative without abandoning their roots." This residency marked Taleex Band’s second performance at The Cedar, when all thirteen original members graced our stage to wow the audience, with a little help from several jazz musicians from Augsburg College.

Taleex Band’s residency combined with several showings of “Fishing Without Nets,” directed by first-time feature filmmaker Cutter Hodierne and presented by VICE Films. Shot in East Africa with Somali non-professional actors, “Fishing Without Nets” tells the story of Abdi, a principled young husband and father in Somalia who turns to piracy to support his family. When some of the pirates resort to violence, Abdi must make difficult choices to determine his course.
