Kicking Off The Cedar’s 35th Anniversary Year

Special Activities Planned in 2024 Include 35th Anniversary Concerts, a New Mural by Leslie Barlow and Hibaaq Ibrahim, and Community Collaborations

The Cedar Cultural Center proudly marks its 35th year of programming in September 2024. To commemorate this significant milestone, The Cedar has curated a series of 35th Anniversary shows as well as community and neighborhood collaborations.

Since its opening on September 16, 1989, The Cedar has steadfastly promoted intercultural appreciation through global music. As a unique all-ages venue in the Midwest, it plays a crucial role in sustaining the vibrancy and diversity of the Twin Cities’ arts scene. Patrons can enjoy global music at concerts, discover local talent through The Cedar Commissions, and engage in educational events like the Global Roots Festival. Students can benefit from $10 rush tickets at all shows.

It’s with immense joy that we celebrate The Cedar’s remarkable 35-year journey. As we embark on this milestone season, our commitment to the West Bank neighborhood remains unwavering, and we’re thrilled to deepen our connection with the diverse tapestry that surrounds us. Join us for a show, be part of the music, the rhythm, and the magic—because at The Cedar, the celebration is not just ours, it’s yours too.
— Michelle Woster, Executive Director of The Cedar.

Stay tuned for exciting 35th Anniversary celebrations, including:

Mural Project

To celebrate this milestone year, The Cedar will collaborate with noted local artists Leslie Barlow and Hibaaq Ibrahim on a mural for the side of The Cedar’s building. The mural will feature imagery of music and connection, inspired by neighborhood feedback, and will be unveiled in Summer 2024.

Community Collaborations

35th-anniversary programming and community connections will unfold throughout 2024, including collaborations with the Minnesota Orchestra’s Day of Music, a Cedar stage at the Minnesota State Fair, and an official anniversary September soiree to be announced.

35th Anniversary Shows

Throughout 2024, The Cedar is presenting special 35th-anniversary shows that encapsulate key aspects of the organization’s past, present, and future. These shows will be distinguished with a 35th-anniversary logo on the website.

When we discussed the wish list of artists to return to our stage in this 35th Anniversary year, ROBYN HITCHCOCK was unanimous! So much sympatico between us....with Robyn's illustrious career spanning many decades and the richness of his craft more substantial and surrealistic with every new album and song uttered from his wry, curious point of view.

The Cedar is truly honored to be hosting this enduring troubadour.

Kiran Ahluwalia

Saturday, May 11, 2024

$35 Advance / $40 Day of Show

Tickets

Two-time JUNO and Songlines Award winner Kiran Ahluwalia’s open-hearted vocals have positioned her as one of global music’s most compelling cross-pollinators bringing together the disparate traditions of Indian music, West African Blues and Jazz.

With her band of electric guitar, accordion, organ, tabla, bass and drum kit, Ahluwalia creates boundary-breaking songs that invite us to explore the human condition, transcending the self by losing ourselves in a trance of groove and melody. Celebrating The Cedar’s mission to promote intercultural appreciation and understanding through the presentation of global music on this special springtime Saturday evening show.
