ABOUT THIS SHOW

As the lovechild of Hole and Lucinda Williams, Brennan Wedl sings the songs of her life with honesty, grit and style. With her new single “Two Dollar Pistol” out on Kill Rock Stars, Wedl is squaring up for 2024 with new music in the hopper and extensive touring. The Cedar is delighted to be a Saturday night stage for this package of artists featuring Dirt Buyer and friends from the Minneapolis based She Rock She Rock (Girls Rock and Roll Retreat), minigolf.

About Brennan Wedl

Image of Brennan Wedl

Brennan Wedl documents those dizzying years spent in the world of ‘twenty-something’. Her radically unvarnished accounts detail an expansive universe that interweaves the everyday with scenes that might include catholic church camps, queer awakenings, one-night stands, or collapsed ‘forever’ relationships. The result? An eminently relatable catalog of moments when profound realizations arrive unexpectedly.

While she has been steadily releasing poignant dispatches as a solo artist since 2016, in 2024 she takes a striking step forward with a new series of singles that will be released via Kill Rock Stars. These recordings capture Wedl at her most unbounded and creatively impulsive; delivering sweetly lilting country one minute, and crashing rock the next, ringing out with jangling brightness at times and introspective in hushed acoustic guitar picking elsewhere.

Wedl’s knack for encapsulating the moment has been apparent since co-founding the elusive queercore Boston band Dazey & The Scouts in 2017.

DIRT BUYER

Joe Sutkowski (Dirt Buyer)’s new album is a documentation of making it to the other side. Sutkowski grew up in New Jersey, and although he lives in Brooklyn now, he remains “an emo kid at heart,” garnering inspiration from bands like My Chemical Romance and Muse, the latter of whose theatrical, dramatic performances inspired the band’s own vocal-forward, soaring takes. Initially working together as a duo while Sutkowski and Ruben Radlauer (Model/Actriz) were at school in Berklee, the band’s self-titled 2019 debut album was recorded on an IPhone in their practice room on just drums and guitar, and the quietly striking, nuanced stylings earned them accolades far beyond the “fake record label” the two made up to originally release their music.

The band’s new album, Dirt Buyer II (Bayonet), was recorded in February 2020, and represents a foray into heavier material that marks a deeper shift for the band. Now working as a trio, Sutkowski is flanked by Tristan Allen on bass (who is a puppeteer by trade building marionettes for their own solo project), and Mike Costa on drums, a fellow Berklee grad who cut his teeth playing in bands across Boston including past collaborations with Sutkowski.

In the spring of 2021, drummer Colby Hansen invited Mariah Mercedes (guitar, vocals) and Megan Mahoney (bass) over to her backyard. The three of them sat under the cover of the legendary “gayzebo” (a gazebo with gay people in it) and began to dream up the beginnings of a new band. Driven by the mutual desire to shred and make people dance, the three musicians took up their instruments and started to play. This routine repeated every Monday until they got closer and closer to achieving their sound. As the trio was preparing to play their first show in February 2023, they realized something (or someone) was missing. Almost immediately, Katherine Soairse (guitar) joined the ranks, completing what we now know as the Minneapolis supergroup; minigolf. minigolf’s associated acts include Lissie, Gully Boys, Boyish, Yellow Ostrich, Early Eyes, Huhroon, Mike Kota, and more. Named after the recreational sport, minigolf is here to cure your blues. Their set is replete with rhythm heavy power pop and melodies you’ll want to sing all day and all night. These songs will make you laugh, cry, or reminisce about that dream car. Whatever you’re feeling, minigolf can accommodate - with a song and a dance floor.
