ABOUT THIS SHOW
ABOUT THIS SHOW
TaikoArts Midwest presents TaikoGroove — a genre-defying collision of taiko tradition and industrial power. Ensō Daiko and Savage Aural Hotbed join forces for an electrifying night of high-energy percussion, found-object instruments, and literal sparks flying. Directed by Craig Johnson.
TaikoArts Midwest’s mission is to develop, produce, and promote artistic excellence in taiko performance, using taiko as a way to strengthen and build community in the Midwest.
Ensō Daiko
Ensō Daiko offers loud, energetic performances that combine music, dance, culture, and pure athleticism. The group regularly premieres new work adding their unique voice to the expanding canon and innovation of North American taiko. Through performances, studio classes and school residencies, Ensō Daiko has taught thousands of students of all ages and abilities.

Savage Aural Hotbed
Savage Aural Hotbed creates their compelling sound using conventional and “found object” percussion instruments, bass guitar, electronically modified horns and vocals, and power tools. With up to four people drumming, they provide visual, as well as aural excitement with their high energy rhythms, flailing arms, and flying sparks.
The precise, percussive sound of Savage Aural Hotbed is inspired by many influences, most notably Japanese Taiko drumming, and the cutting edge (sometimes literally...they use saws and grinders on stage) innovation of Industrial. Other influences include diverse styles such as modern minimalist, and many ethnic styles.
Members are: Mark Black, Stuart DeVaan, Dean Hawthorne, and William Melton.
